Lions Square

ABOUT

Lions Square, also known as Eleftherios Venizelos Square, is situated opposite St Mark's Basilica in the heart of Heraklion. It is distinguished by the Morosini Fountain featuring four lions spouting water from their mouths. Considered one of the most exquisite Venetian monuments in Heraklion, it is exceptionally well-preserved.

Its construction was driven not by aesthetics but by the necessity of supplying water to the city of Heraklion. Francesco Morosini, the visionary behind the project, bestowed the fountain with his name.

Lions Square is the most vibrant and bustling spot in the city. Surrounding the square, there are cafés and shops offering fast food that remain open until dawn.

The area around the square hosts various cultural activities.
