Lavrakas: A Quiet Force on Gavdos
ABOUT
If you’ve made it to Gavdos, chances are you’re seeking peace and solitude, far from the crowds.
About 20 minutes from Agios Ioannis beach, along a well-trodden path, you’ll find Lavrakas beach.
It’s believed that the name comes from the Minoan word “labrys,” meaning double axe.
Local legend says that the mythical Calypso once lived in the area’s caves.
Enjoy true isolation on golden sand and in crystal-clear waters.
A small river with just a trickle of summer water flows toward the sea through a magical path shaded by pines and junipers—well worth the walk.
And perhaps most surprisingly, right near the shore, there’s a well with clean, drinkable water, often used by those who camp out here.
