Dafnes: A Village for Wine Lovers and Authentic Experiences!

ABOUT

Dafnes, a village famous for its wine, is the perfect destination if you want to taste excellent local wine and meet warm, welcoming people. Located in the heart of Crete’s wine country, Dafnes offers more than just great wine—it’s a chance to immerse yourself in the traditions of Cretan life.

Start your journey by following the road to the Church of Agios Ioannis Prodromos, and take a moment to unwind in the shade of an ancient Cretan oak tree nearby. Afterward, head to the impressive Kavousi Fountain, one of the largest and most beautiful fountains in the region.

Cool off at the Tsigounis spring, and cross the old stone bridge that connects the riverbanks. Along the way, you might even encounter one of the last blacksmiths in Crete, where you can watch this rare trade being practiced up close.

Make sure to sample Dafnes' renowned wine, especially when paired with ofto kreas—Cretan slow-cooked lamb roasted in a traditional wood-fired oven—at one of the local tavernas. Wine lovers will be delighted to know that the village is home to several wineries, and if you're lucky, your visit might coincide with the village's famous Wine Festival or the annual celebration of large families on September 17th.
