Archaeological Site of Zakros

ABOUT

Eastern Crete played a crucial role in the Minoan era.

Only 500 metres away from the coastal settlement of Kato Zakros, lies the archaeological site of Zakros.
The excavations in the area  revealed a new Minoan palace, the fourth in Crete, after the palaces of Knossos, Phaistos and Malia. Although smaller, it yielded over 10,000 objects of exceptional artistry, many of which have been characterized as ‘royal’. These findings are currently exhibited in a specially designed room of the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.

Covering an area of over 8,000 square meters, the palace is constructed around a central courtyard, much like other notable palaces in Crete. While sharing similarities with these palaces, it also possesses distinctive characteristics that contribute to the broader understanding of Minoan architecture.
