Archaeological Museum of Sitia
ABOUT
The Archaeological Museum of Sitia opened its doors to the public in 1984, one hundred years after the first official excavations in the area by the Italian Archaeological School. The largest and richest collection is that of the palace of Kato Zakros, which includes numerous significant findings, some of which are masterpieces of Minoan art. The most famous object in the museum is considered to be the gold and ivory figurine from the Minoan city of Palekastro.
The exhibits cover a period of approximately 4,000 years, from the Late Neolithic to the Late Roman Period, and are presented in excavation sets organised by regions. The display cases provide general multilingual information to the visitor, which will become more detailed in the future without compromising the aesthetics of the findings.
