This is a tradition that comes to life every New Year’s Eve. The "Varela" is set up at the heart of Heraklion, at a central location known as Meidani (the crossroads of Justice Street, 1821 Street, and Idis Street).
The meeting point is just above Lions Square. There, on December 31, a traffic officer takes their place, surrounded by a specially constructed stand, tasked with managing vehicle traffic.
This sight evokes nostalgia among older Heraklion residents, recalling a time before traffic lights even existed.
On December 31, 2024, the "Varela" was set up once again, and the tradition was revived to the sounds of the Heraklion Municipal Philharmonic Orchestra. As is customary, officials exchanged wishes and delivered messages promoting safe road conduct.
