On a lush green hillside in Prassa, just 7 kilometers from Heraklion, lies Cretan Dragon Farm— a farm that blends authenticity, innovation, and Cretan hospitality.

The story of the Alexakis family began over half a century ago, cultivating olive trees and producing olive oil and raisins. However, the challenges of recent years, with the low price of olive oil, led them to something bold: the creation of the first organized DragonFruit (Pitaya) cultivation on the island.

For more than four generations, the family has been cultivating the land in Prassa. It all started with the great-grandfather, M. Steiakakis, passed down to grandfather G. Stereos, and the family tradition continues to this day — naturally, evolving with the times.

This exotic fruit, known for its nutritional value and impressive appearance, now thrives in the blessed Cretan soil, alongside centuries-old olive trees.

"It is a true nutritional treasure, rich in vitamin C, calcium, iron, magnesium, and antioxidants," says farm owner Mr. Alexios Alexakis.

According to studies from American health institutions, DragonFruit strengthens the immune system, supports the digestive system, improves heart function, enhances the skeletal system, assists in weight control, and helps regulate blood sugar levels.

The farm has opened its doors to visitors who want to experience authentic nature-based activities.

The tour includes a walk among the DragonFruit rows, tasting traditional products such as olive oil, olives, and homemade jams, as well as enjoying coffee or herbal tea with local herbs. The view of Dia Island is breathtaking, while the relaxation in nature rejuvenates every visitor. All this, accompanied by smiles, authentic hospitality, and stories from people who truly love their land.

The nearby Karteros beach offers the perfect opportunity to combine your visit to the farm with a refreshing swim, without straying far from the city.

The future of Cretan Dragon Farm looks even more exciting, with plans to create a Minoan-style olive mill, offering visitors an interactive experience with the history of Crete. They will embark on a unique journey through time and learn how the Minoans ground their olives and produced their oil.

It is a place that proves that tradition and innovation can coexist in perfect harmony — and this might just be the most authentic Crete you will ever experience.
