Just a kilometre before reaching the mountain village of Marathos in the Malevizi region, you’ll come across the charming little café “Doxa.” This is a special spot, a gathering place for locals and travellers alike, who seek warmth, hospitality, and authentic Cretan flavours.
Time seems to stand still at “Doxa.” Whether you visit in summer to enjoy breathtaking views over Heraklion or in winter to bask in the warmth of the wood-burning stove, this café promises an experience steeped in tradition. The walls are adorned with old family photographs, while just outside, a sign points towards the famous Doxa Cave—well worth a visit.
"Doxa" is a family affair. Owner Giorgos Prinari inherited his love for the café from his father, Manolis. Today, alongside his wife, children, and daughters-in-law, he continues the tradition, offering a welcoming and homely atmosphere to visitors.
The Prinari family is also known for producing exceptional thyme honey—a craft passed down through generations. Today, the third generation of beekeepers—Manolis, Zacharias, and Panagiotis—carry on the legacy, creating honey of unparalleled quality. You can buy it from their shop, “Meloupolis,” in the centre of Heraklion, or enjoy it in its most authentic form—drizzled over the legendary myzithropitakia at “Doxa.”
The café may be small, but it offers everything: coffee, meze, and even a full meal. If you make it here, your first order should be the famous myzithropitakia—warm, delicate pastries filled with soft cheese and generously topped with their own honey. Then, try the traditional Sfakian pie with tangy myzithra cheese and the irresistible chortopitakia, savoury pastries filled with wild greens. Everything is made with local ingredients, including cheeses from the village of Marathos.
If you’re in the mood for something more filling, the menu features classic Cretan dishes: tangy vinegar-cured sausage, slow-cooked lamb fricassée, creamy fava, and the famous αντικριστό—tender lamb, cooked the traditional way over an open fire.
Many hikers choose “Doxa” as the perfect place to rest after conquering the slopes of Stroumboulas, a mountain known for its spectacular trails and panoramic views.
Here, good food, tradition, and nature come together to create a truly unforgettable experience.
