In 2025, a series of events will highlight this ancient tradition, deeply rooted in the island’s culinary and cultural heritage.
Organized by the Region of Crete – Regional Unit of Chania, in collaboration with local associations, this initiative is part of “Crete: European Region of Gastronomy 2026”. The goal? To showcase the unique biodiversity of Cretan greens and their central role in the island’s diet for over 2,500 years.
Crete boasts one of the richest varieties of wild edible greens in the world, with more than 120 species thriving across its mountains, plains, and coastal areas. Unlike in other cuisines, where greens are often a side dish or salad, in Crete, they take center stage, forming the heart of many traditional recipes.
A Hands-On Experience
Following the success of its first edition, "Shall We Go for Greens?" will return in 2025 with even more interactive experiences. From February to April, 18 local associations will host events in 14 locations across Chania, allowing participants to immerse themselves in the practice of foraging and cooking these wild treasures.
Each event follows the same core principle: a guided foraging walk in nature, where experts share their knowledge on how to identify, harvest, and respect these greens to ensure sustainability for future generations. What makes the experience even richer is the exchange of stories between participants from different regions, who share their local names, uses, and traditions related to these plants.
Where and When?
Each local association will add its own unique touch, making every event a one-of-a-kind experience. The gatherings take place at 11:00 AM, and here’s where you can join:
- February 8 – Kefalas Square
