ABOUT

On the small peninsula of Trypitos, situated 3 kilometres east of Sitia, the remnants of a city from Hellenistic times (mid 4th - mid 1st century BC) have been uncovered. This archaeological site appears to encompass the entire peninsula, leading to speculation that it might be the ancient city of Sitia, known as Itia.

According to the Ministry of Culture, in 1967, a shipyard dating back to Hellenistic times was discovered on the east coast of the peninsula. Testimonies suggest that in 1960, the owners converted the peninsula into cultivation areas, utilising mechanical methods that resulted in significant damage to antiquities. Systematic excavation research, directed by N Papadakis, was initiated by the Ephorate in 1987 to further explore and document the historical site.

A significant find was the discovery of a set of coins from this city, revealing that it had its own independent coinage system.
