Toplou Monastery
ABOUT
It is a historic monastery and landmark for an entire region.
The original monastery was reportedly built in the 15th century, but was destroyed in 1612 by an earthquake. It was later rebuilt with the financial support of the Venetian rulers of the island, but it was destroyed again during the period Ottoman conquest.
The original name of the monastery is ‘Panagia Akrotiriani’, as it appears in official documents and seals from the 15th or 16th century. The name "Toplou" is first mentioned in a Turkish document of 1673.
Toplou Monastery Museums
There are two very important museums in the Toplou Monastery. A museum of icons and books, religious relics and ecclesiastical items and a museum of engravings and historical relics. Moreover, the monastery itself is a remarkable and interesting monument that has recently been restored in an exemplary way.
