Piskokefalo of Sitia: The Fief of the Kornaros Family

ABOUT

It stands as one of the largest and most prosperous villages within the Municipality of Sitia.

As per Wikipedia, Piskokefalo was once part of the fiefdom of the Venetian-Cretan Kornaros family, who produced the renowned poet of 'Erotokritos,' Vitsentzos Kornaros. The Kornaros house and watermill have been meticulously restored and are slated for the establishment of a Vitsentzos Kornaros museum. The family also possessed the church of Agios Georgios within the village, which proudly displays their coat of arms.

To the north of the village, close to Katrinia Hill, an agricultural sanctuary has been excavated, revealing valuable artefacts, including figurines of pregnant women. Along the road between Sitia and Piskokefalo, the remains of a two-storey Minoan villa have been unearthed, and visitors can still observe the surviving ruins of rooms, stairs, protective boulders, and other features facing the river or the sea.
