Paule Faure Cave
ABOUT
If you want to delve into both the history and geological richness of Amari, the Paule Faure Cave, also known as Notiki Trypa, is a great choice!
You will find it on the small Kalikás plateau, northeast of the village of Nithavri, on the western slope of Psiloritis.
This sacred cave is located at an altitude of approximately 1,200 meters, with its entrance facing south. It was named after the renowned French religious scholar and archaeologist Paule Faure, who dedicated his life to studying the sacred caves of Crete.
According to Faure, this particular cave served as a sanctuary during the Minoan period and likely attracted male worshippers—shepherds and hunters—who honored a nymph or a mountain goddess, possibly Diktynna, who was later identified with Artemis.
