Matala Beach
ABOUT
Matala is situated 68 kilometres southwest of Heraklion and is a well-loved tourist hotspot in Crete. The Matala beach, known for its distinctive caves and historical association with the hippie community, is a major draw for tourists interested in experiencing the place where the ‘flower children’, as they are affectionately known in Greece, lived during the 1970s.
Matala Beach features a combination of sandy and fine pebble shores and extends over a length of 300 metres. The waters here are deep, exceptionally clear, and can produce substantial waves when the wind picks up.
In fact, the most adventurous individuals attempt to dive from a cave located beside the bay into its deep waters.
The beach is fully equipped with amenities including parasols, sun loungers, showers, a lifeguard, toilet facilities, a canteen, and a water sports school.
Surrounding the beach, you'll discover numerous lively tavernas and bars.
