Panagia Kera or Kardiotissa Convent
ABOUT
According to tradition, the establishment of the Convent of Panagia Kera or Kardiotissa is linked to the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, which is currently located in the church of St Alphonsus in Esquilino, Rome. The icon was believed to be the work of St Lazarus, a monk and iconographer who lived during the reign of Emperor Theophilus (9th century). The icon depicts the Infant Christ held in the left arm of the Virgin, resting on her heart, and is known as the ‘Kardiotissa’, meaning ‘of the heart’.
‘Panagia Kera’ (the Lady Mary) is the other miraculous icon that is currently located in the sanctuary of the convent’s church and bears the name ‘The Lady Kardiotissa’.
The convent celebrates the 8th of September, the day of the Birth of the Virgin Mary.
