Neratze Mosque
ABOUT
The Neratze Mosque, also known as Neratzes, is a structure in the Old Town of Rethymno, originally serving as the principal church of the Santa Maria Monastery of the Augustinian order.
Following the Ottoman conquest of Rethymno, the monastery underwent conversion into a mosque, known as Neratze Mosque. After the population exchange and the departure of Muslims from Crete in 1924, the building was repurposed into a conservatory.
The structure boasts a rectangular shape with three semi-circular domes, complemented by a circular skylight, windows, and a Renaissance-style door.
Characteristic of the mosque is its minaret, featuring two balconies, making it the tallest in the city. This minaret was constructed in 1890 by the engineer George Daskalakis.
