Monastery of Agios Georgios Epanosifis
ABOUT
This monastery, devoted to Agios Georgios, stands as one of the oldest in the Heraklion region and holds significance within the broader context of Crete.
The monastery presently houses valuable relics, including gospels, intricately carved wooden crosses, a silver chalice dating back to 1842, vestments, and various other treasures. It commemorates its feast days on 23rd April and 3rd November.
During World War II, this monastery assumed a crucial role. In 1941, its monks actively participated in the Battle of Crete. The Abbot's residence was transformed into a hospital to care for the wounded, and the monastery provided refuge to over 100 urban families. Despite facing multiple instances of plunder by German forces, the monastery rendered significant assistance to guerrilla groups.
Throughout the centuries, the Monastery has nurtured individuals of profound spiritual stature, many of whom, through their exemplary lives and actions, ascended to the highest ecclesiastical positions.
