During the Easter holiday, Crete offers many options to the faithful but also to those who want to experience how Orthodox Easter is celebrated.
It is worth visiting the Monastery on Good Friday and Easter Monday.
On Good Friday, during the Epitaph service, once the Epitaph procession is completed at the Monastery, everyone proceeds to the cemetery. Afterwards, they make their way to the sheep shed located within the monastery, where all the sheep pass beneath the Epitaph.
Easter Monday is celebrated as the Feast of St George, attracting numerous people who come to the monastery to honour him. On this day, an equestrian club traditionally pays a visit to the Monastery. During the litany of the icon of St George around the Monastery, a particular Cretan horse breed called Georgalidika leads the procession. The visitors are captivated by the games that take place near the Monastery. These games have a connection to St George, as he was associated with horseback riding and military activities.
