Minoan town of Kommos
ABOUT
The Minoan city of Kommos is one of the most significant archaeological sites in Heraklion. According to the Region of Crete, this site served as the port of Phaistos from around 1650 to 1250 B.C. In the 19th century, driven by a burst of romantic imagination, Italian archaeologist Taramelli linked Kommos to the place where King Menelaus of Sparta shipwrecked on his return from Troy, as Homer recounts in his epic tales of the Trojan War.
The ruins of this ancient city lie near one of Crete’s most beautiful beaches, and nearby, you can explore charming villages like Pitsidia. The archaeological site is also accessible to visitors with disabilities, making it a welcoming destination for all.
Kommos offers a perfect blend of history, legend, and natural beauty, inviting you to delve into Crete’s rich past while enjoying the serene coastal landscape.
