Krousonas or Gaidourorachi (Donkey’s Back) Gorge
ABOUT
This gorge, reminiscent of a donkey’s back, was traversed by the Minoans as they journeyed to the ancient site of Zominthos.
Indeed, the gorge of Krousonas is often referred to as the Gorge of Gaidourorachi due to the distinctive shape of the mountain that resembles a donkey's back when viewed from a distance.
The Gorge of Krousonas is situated in eastern Psiloritis, approximately 3 kilometres west of the village of Krousonas. It is nestled between the peaks of Voskero, which stands at an elevation of 1197 metres, and Gournos, reaching 1293 metres in height.
As you traverse its paths, you'll encounter the untamed beauty of the landscape, with small waterfalls gracing certain areas. One of the notable features of the gorge is the Arizano Spring, a natural water source that flows continuously throughout the year.
Traversed by the Minoans
The gorge serves as a passage for the ancient Minoan path, once traversed by the Minoans to reach ancient Zominthos. This road runs alongside the riverbed on the southern slopes of the gorge, offering a breath-taking view of unparalleled beauty. Along the way, there is also an old lime kiln, adding a touch of historical charm to the journey.
