Dynamic Cultural Initiatives and Ini Dam: Shaping the Landscape
ABOUT
The most extensive modern technical project undertaken in the area is the Ini Dam, completed in 2004. Positioned 38 km south of Heraklion, it lies between the settlements of Ini and Macheras.
Sanctuary for aquatic species
The Ini Dam stands as a multifaceted contributor to the region. Apart from its pivotal role in irrigating agricultural land and enriching the aquifer, the dam has played a significant part in enhancing the biodiversity of the area. Evolving into a noteworthy wetland, the dam has been a magnet for both endemic and migratory birds from its inception, serving as a refuge for various aquatic species to this day. Its diverse benefits underscore its importance in fostering ecological richness and sustainability.
