Armeni: A Stop Worth Making
ABOUT
Armeni is situated in the municipality of Rethymno and is designated as a traditional settlement of Greece. Positioned 10.5 kilometres south of Rethymno, along the road to the municipality of Agios Vasilios, Armeni is nestled in a valley at an altitude of 380 metres, to the west of Mt Vrysina. The valley is characterised by the cultivation of vineyards, olive trees, and various fruit-bearing trees.
The region was initially settled by Armenian soldiers who arrived with N Fokas during the liberation of Crete in 961 AD. Historically, the primary occupation of the residents involved harvesting acorns, utilised in the tanning process. In proximity to the settlement lies an oak forest, housing the Late Minoan cemetery.
The village boasts a football team (OFA), a vibrant cultural club, and an overall organisational structure that aligns with the standards of a large city.
The village offers rental villas and accommodation for hikers with available rooms.
