Almyros Gorge
ABOUT
This particular Cretan gorge is notable for having not only one or two, but a grand total of seven different names or designations.
The Almyros Gorge is formed between the hills of Keri Forest and the hill of Kastrokefala, where the ancient city rests on top. The gorge follows its course and eventually reaches the beach of Ellinoperama, also known as Linoperamata.
The Almyros Gorge is a highly significant habitat due to the presence of the largest green olive tree forest, specifically the species known as Phillirea Media, in all of Crete. Additionally, visitors to this area will encounter various other plant species such as wild olives, carob trees, plane trees, oaks, and Cretan cypresses.
