Agios Charalambos, Lassithi or ‘Geron to Mouri’

At one point in history, it served a similar role to the Pnyx of Ancient Athens.
In the village of Agios Charalambos, Lassithi, the local elders convened to discuss and make decisions regarding significant matters concerning the region.
‘Geron to Mouri’
Until 1960, the settlement was known as ‘Geron to Mouri’, and since 1960, it has been called Agios Charalambos, named after the village church. The original name, ‘Geron to Mouri’, originated from the morphological characteristics of the area.
Near the village entrance, across from the present-day cemetery, lies a section of the sanctuary of an ancient Byzantine church dedicated to Saints Sergios and Bacchus. A few years ago, during the construction of the peripheral road around the plateau, a cave filled with bones and skulls was uncovered to the north of the village.
