Seli Ambelou: Unforgettable Roast Pork in a Wood-Fired Oven with a View of the Lassithi Mountains!
ABOUT
The Lassithi Plateau is famed for its windmills and stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. In the charming village of Lagou, a short stroll from the scenic mill site of Seli Ambelou, you’ll find the namesake taverna and cultural space. Here, you can taste dishes prepared in a traditional wood-fired oven—most notably their famous roast pork. Other highlights include hearty home-cooked dishes like handmade zimerá (grandma's pasta), village sausage, and their own cured pichti.
This family-owned business, founded in 1979, has now passed to the third generation, led by Mr. Apostolis Tzanakis. The meats come from local farmers, and in summer, the vegetables are grown on-site.
Pair your meal with a visit to the legendary Cave of Zeus (Dikteon Cave) or take in some history at the Panagia Kera church or the Vidiani Monastery.
The tip of Local!
If you’re visiting in winter, be sure to check for snow or bring snow chains, as the area can get icy.
