Kato Metochi or Gaidouromantra
ABOUT
Located at the lowest elevation of the Lassithi Plateau, Kato Metochi is a small settlement within the Municipality of Lassithi Plateau, established after the 15th century. This was when Venice decided to repopulate and cultivate the Lassithi plain after a mandated 200-year abandonment period. Kato Metochi, named "Kato" (meaning "Lower") due to its position at the lowest point, is near the Chonos, a natural sinkhole where rainwater drains from the plain.
Historically, the village also bore the name Gaidouromantra, which persisted until 1881, as recorded by the historian Castrofilakas. One theory for this unusual name ("Donkey Enclosure") is that it may have been a resting stop for pack animals (mules and donkeys) before they set out for the next leg of their journey toward Kastelli Pediados. In the Venetian era, Kastelli was a key location for large grain storage facilities.
