Quality ingredients and culinary artistry are the foundation of Cretan cuisine! Recipes that have remained unchanged over the centuries, without rare or expensive ingredients, prepared with love and dedication by passionate cooks. Discover the traditional Cretan cuisine at Xylouris Tavern!
This is a family business where you will feel like you are entering a friendly home. They will rush to serve you with a warm welcome.
The menu is based on homemade dishes, handmade starters and local lamb and sheep. Throughout the year you will taste simple but delicious recipes and of course the famous "antikristo".
Xylouris' Antikristo is famous! It is lamb cooked according to an ancient method. Certain pieces (goulidia) are selected and placed in a circle around the fire, facing each other. This traditional dish takes 3 hours to cook and a lot of patience and dedication to perfect!
Don't miss the chance to try the "gamopilafo" (rice) and the pasta with anthotyro (fresh cheese) made with homemade broth.
All dishes are dressed with extra virgin olive oil produced by the family and in summer some of the vegetables come from their own garden.
The menu offers a wide variety of starters, such as the exquisite lamb liver savour, as well as grilled meats. Traditional Cretan sweets are also offered as a treat: Sfakian pie with honey, sour "sarikopites" (pies) and pies with sweet cheese.
The interior of the tavern invites you to discover the history of Crete as depicted on the walls.
Woolen blankets called "batania" wrap around the stone walls, warming the room, while framed pictures tell you a story. In one of them you may see Psarantonis with Nikos Xylouris. Opposite, you can admire a variety of objects that make up the history of the place.
Bells of all kinds hang on the wall, a lyre rests in a corner...
In the outdoor area of the tavern you can enjoy your meal overlooking the endless blue sea, with the salty sea breeze as your best companion.
With Cretan music, folklore and rebetika you will enjoy an authentic Cretan gastronomic experience. Finish off with fruit with raki, a sweetmeat, and a childhood favourite, a vanilla fondant dunked in cold water.
