Kazantzakis Tomb

ABOUT

The final resting place of the esteemed Cretan writer is situated in the Martinengo Bastion, in accordance with his own wishes. This decision followed his excommunication by the church after his last work was deemed anti-Christian.

The tomb is modest, adorned with a substantial wooden cross and an inscription according to his wishes: ‘I hope for nothing, I fear nothing, I am free.

Surrounding the tomb is a small grove offering panoramic views of the city of Heraklion.

Honorary events, including wreath-laying ceremonies and speeches, are held at the site.
