The exhibition is hosted within the Ottoman fortress of Koules in Aptera.

A remarkable exhibition about the three castles that stand guard over the bay of Souda and the history of the surrounding region through the ages is on display inside the Koules Fortress in Aptera until December 31, 2025.

The archival exhibition, titled “The Guardians of Souda,” is organized by the Municipality of Chania and KEPPEDICH KAM to celebrate the reopening of the monument, now accessible to the public. Over the past two years, restoration work led by the Municipality of Chania has revived the fortress, restoring its key functions.

The Bay of Souda, one of the safest natural harbors in the Mediterranean, has been recognized for its strategic importance since antiquity. Over the centuries, numerous defensive systems were developed in the region to protect it.

It is no coincidence that Souda Island, the Izzedin Fortress, and the Koules Fortress in Aptera form an invisible line that crosses and protects the bay of Souda. Additionally, the site is home to the ancient city of Aptera.

Through rare maps, engravings, historical photographs, and materials from the invaluable collection of the Chania Municipal Library, as well as selected excerpts from literary works, visitors will delve into the history of Souda, its rich heritage, and some of its more recent monuments.

The exhibition is bilingual (Greek and English) and open to the public during the monument’s operating hours.
