Hiking in the Pefki Gorge, Sitia – Vreiko Cave

On Sunday, April 13, 2025, the Mountaineering Club of Agios Nikolaos is organizing a circular hike through the lush Pefki Gorge, with its impressive white walls, located in the southeast of the Sitia region.

The route is described as follows:
“We’ll follow the path through the gorge, where water flows in many spots forming small waterfalls, and we’ll climb up to the picturesque village of Pefki. Here, those who wish can enjoy a coffee, while the rest of us will continue uphill to the church of Stavromenos on top of the hill and the Vreiko Cave. Afterwards, we’ll all descend back together to the starting point.”

HIKING TIME: 4 to 6 hours (excluding necessary stops)
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: 1 / 1+
ELEVATION GAIN: approx. 450 / 700 m
DISTANCE: approx. 11 / 17 km

DEPARTURE: From Agios Nikolaos, 24 Karamanli Street (parking of Vasilopoulos supermarket) at 8:00 AM. We’ll be travelling in private cars, so please give €10 to the driver. If you’re heading straight to the trail, be at Koutsouras field no later than 9:00 AM. Google Maps Link

Please confirm your participation to the group leader or to Giannis Pangalos (tel. 2841028173, during shop hours) by sending a message with your full name and whether you have a car or not, for better planning. If the weather or other conditions aren’t favourable, the leader may adjust the route.
