In 2024, Ierapetra set a challenge for itself and succeeded: it dressed up for the holidays, spreading Christmas cheer to everyone who visits!

The southernmost city in Europe has entered the race as one of Crete’s top Christmas destinations with a decoration that left residents and visitors in awe. For the first time in its history, the city lit up with dazzling lights, setting social media on fire!

The big surprise this year? Behind this magical transformation are volunteers—primarily the mayor’s family, advisors, and deputy mayors, along with their families. They took to the streets to create this impressive spectacle. The preparation began three months in advance, with the team working tirelessly to bring the vision to life.

All the decorations are handcrafted, from candy cane-style lamp posts to “lollipop trees” adorning the city’s squares and streets. The volunteers delivered 100% on their ambitious plan, decorating 300 trees and over 300 poles.

The locals are thrilled. “We’ve never seen anything like this in Ierapetra before!” they said. Visitors from surrounding areas are flocking to the city to see the now-famous candy cane lamp posts. The decorations have gone viral on social media, flooding Instagram and Facebook with pictures.

“SantaGerapetros’ elves” have big plans: to make Ierapetra Crete’s ultimate Christmas destination. “Get ready for #SantaGerapetros 2025!”
