The Asterousia Mountains epitomise rugged, otherworldly landscapes that inspire a sense of wonder in those who venture to explore them.

Our journey commences at Paranymfi (elevation 510 m), and following an unpaved road, we arrive at the ancient monastery of Agios Pavlos (elevation 460 m), where a spring provides fresh water.

Next, we descend through a well-marked path, carefully navigating a rugged gorge, all the while enjoying the breath-taking view of the South Cretan Sea.

Shortly before reaching Tris Ekklisies, we alter our course and set our sights on the Koudoumas Monastery.

For approximately one hour, the path ascends, and then it descends along a forested trail leading to the monastery. Visitors have the option of accommodation in the monastery's rooms, which provide basic amenities such as a kitchen, water, and bathroom facilities. Additionally, meals are available at noon and in the evening.

Within the complex, you'll find a guest reception area, dining room, library, a small museum, and the monks' cells. To arrange your stay, it's necessary to make prior arrangements by calling 6974852023 one day in advance. The monastery is situated by the sea, offering the opportunity to take a refreshing dip in the cool waters of the Libyan Sea.

Continuing along the path to Agios Ioannis, you'll come across the remarkable triangular Cave of Agios Antonios, housing a church dedicated to Agios Antonios. Inside the cave, you can find stalagmites and stalactites, with water flowing from them and collecting in three troughs.

The cave once served as a hermitage for numerous monks, including the founders of the Koudoumas Monastery, Saints Parthenios and Evmenios. A bit further along the coast, you'll encounter an old shipwreck. The final destination at the end of this route is Ai-Giannis.

Returning from Ai-Giannis, the route leads to Kapetaniana and then Paranymfi. However, the road is unpaved and necessitates the use of farm trucks, which are available for a fee, to facilitate your return.
