ABOUT

Georgioupolis is situated in the cove of Almyros Bay, within the prefecture of Chania, near its border with the prefecture of Rethymno. It's a coastal village nestled in a splendid region, positioned between the estuaries of the Almyros and Perastikos rivers.

The Almyros River (Salty River), from which Georgioupolis formerly derived its name as Almyroupolis (Salty Town), flows into the village's harbour, forming a lake along the way, which serves as a sanctuary for various wildlife and birds. The village is adorned with numerous trees, and a charming road lined with eucalyptus trees leads to the port, commencing from the central square.

The settlement boasts an exceptionally beautiful sandy beach, which has earned the prestigious Blue Flag designation. Furthermore, the beach features modern amenities and infrastructure for the convenience of visitors.

Starting from the village centre and heading towards the square, take the asphalt road. Initially, it runs parallel to the highway, and then you'll follow the exit leading over the overpass. The rural road will guide you southward through olive groves to Lake Kournas.

Upon reaching the lake, take exit 1, which will lead you directly to Lake Kournas. It is the only freshwater lake on the island of Crete. In ancient times, Lake Kournas was referred to as ‘Korisia’, but it later acquired its current name from the Arabic word for lake.

Lake Kournas is relatively small, measuring a maximum length of 1,087 metres and a maximum width of 880 metres. It covers an area of 579 acres and is typically shallow, with a maximum depth of 22.5 metres. The lake is situated approximately 20 metres above sea level.

Many people also choose Lake Kournas as the perfect spot for an afternoon picnic. The scenery is serene and captivating, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a leisurely walk in the countryside, a refreshing swim, or a bike ride around the lake.

Lake Kournas features two springs on its south-eastern shore, with one, known as Mati or Amati by the locals, typically visible at the end of the summer. The lake is primarily fed by the waters flowing down from the nearby mountains and hills. Surrounding the lake, you'll find numerous tavernas offering traditional cuisine, making it a delightful place to enjoy local dishes.

You have the option to return using the same route or by taxi. The round trip typically takes a total of 2 hours.
