ABOUT

Approximately 10 kilometres from Sitia, and after traversing the Agioi Pantes (All Saints) Gorge, you'll arrive at the village of Papadiokampos.

At the farthest point to the left, where the initial trail begins, you'll find the Church of the Ascension. From this spot, gazing westward along the unpaved road, you can access the path, which is a segment of the Sitia Geopark route. This is just one of approximately 20 routes you can discover on the sitia-geopark.gr website.

At the start of the path leading to the sea, you'll come across the pirates' cave where, according to legend, pirates concealed their treasure. The gorge becomes narrower as you ascend and requires caution, particularly during rainy weather, as there are no escape routes available.

Located roughly midway along the path and standing 60 metres above the riverbed, you'll find Geloudospilio Cave. The cave derives its name from ‘Geloudes’, a term used by locals to describe demonic entities in the form of women, which were believed to take the lives of new-borns and unbaptised babies, consuming their blood.

The vegetation within the gorge is sparse, and the geological formations of scaly limestone are truly impressive. The trail is well-marked throughout its entirety with red, white, and yellow markings and concludes in a small open area. The village of Skopi is approximately 7 kilometres from the trail's end. Further up, just 500 metres away, stands the fortress of Liopetro.

The fortress was built on a grand scale, with the capacity to accommodate up to 6,000 people. However, it never served its intended purpose in the end, as the inhabitants were ultimately relocated to Candia. Originally known as Leon di Petra, which translates to ‘Lion of Stone’, it was later shortened to ‘Liopetro’.

Liopetro is situated atop a remarkable steep hill, offering panoramic vistas in all directions, including views of the sea. At its summit stands the temple of Prophet Elias (Ilias), and certain sections of the walls, cisterns, and other structures have been preserved.

You have a few options for the return journey. You can retrace your steps and return via the same path. Alternatively, you can arrange for a taxi to pick you up at the gorge's exit, which is accessible from the village of Skopi via a 7-kilometre dirt road. Another option is to walk the 7 kilometres to the village of Skopi.

The journey takes approximately 2 hours to complete.
