ABOUT

A simple route, close to the village of Platanias, on a paved path, will treat you to picturesque scenes and stunning vistas.

As we commence our journey, we head westward towards the Keritis River bridge, renowned as one of the most picturesque rivers in Chania. It originates from the village of Meskla, meanders through the fertile Alikianos basin, and eventually meets the shores of Platanias Beach.

Before it reaches the sea, the Keritis River adopts the name Platanias, named after the plane trees (‘platania’ in Greek) that flourish along its banks. In ancient times, it was referred to as Iardanos.

The coastal path guides us to the Maleme hill, where you'll find the German cemetery.

Maleme is famous for being the landing location of German paratroopers who launched their invasion of Crete in 1941, marking the start of the Battle of Crete (Operation Mercury) during World War II.

The paratroopers captured the aircraft, situated just outside the town. This aircraft, once secured, enabled the Germans to transport additional planes for reinforcement.

A significant number of paratroopers perished during the assault and have been laid to rest in the German cemetery situated on a hill overlooking Maleme.

From the hill, you can have a view of the old airport in the direction of Platanias and the surrounding region.

Returning to the centre of Chania can be achieved by taking a city bus with regular routes, particularly during the summer season.

The trip takes approximately 3 hours and can also be completed by bicycle.
