Venetian port of Chania
ABOUT
The Venetian port of Chania stands as the most iconic monument in the Old Town of Chania and western Crete. It was constructed by the Venetians between 1320 and 1356, primarily for trade and as a defence against pirates.
The port was utilised by the Venetian military fleet and stood as the largest commercial port in the Eastern Mediterranean.
During the 16th century, a fortress was constructed, reinforcing the port with bastions, even at the breakwater.
During the early 20th century, ships would anchor outside the port, and passengers would approach the pier by boat.
Since then, the port of Souda has been utilised as a natural harbour for ships.
Today, the old port accommodates yachts and tourist boats, and during the summer, the surrounding tavernas and cafés bustle with life.
