The artificial Agia Lake
ABOUT
The man-made freshwater Agia Lake, spanning across a 450-acre area, connects to the southern part of the Fasa valley.
The Agia region is supplied with water from underground springs and the Xekolomenos River. The former swamp was transformed by PPC (Public Power Corporation) into a lake for the purpose of hydroelectric power generation.
While the power plant is no longer operational, the Agia Lake continues to support a rich diversity of flora and fauna species native to Crete.
The ecological significance of this wetland is further underscored by its protection under international treaties.
Cafés and tavernas are situated around the lake, providing opportunities for visitors to relax and enjoy refreshments.
