Platanes Gorge: Crete's most challenging

ABOUT

Situated on the steep southern slopes of Mt Kedros, in the Rechtres area, you'll find the Platanes Gorge – one of the most untamed and perilous gorges in Crete.

The gorge is abundantly supplied with water, particularly in the winter and spring months, originating from a spring located above the initial substantial waterfall. This spring ranks as one of the largest sources for the Akoumianos River and, in fact, for the entire island of Crete.

Commencing from the village of Platanes, there is an ascending trail that leads to the foot of the most remarkable waterfall in approximately an hour. This waterfall is referred to as ‘Rechtra Digeni’ (in the Cretan dialect, 'rechtra' or 'rechtara' or 'richtara' signifies a waterfall).

Rechtra Digeni (= waterfall of Digenis), named after the legendary hero closely linked to other local place names and legends, stands as one of the most untamed and awe-inspiring waterfalls in Crete.

The waterfall covers an area of approximately 70 metres and essentially forms two distinct tiers, each measuring about 35 metres in height. Access without specialised equipment is feasible only on its lower tier, which is also the most striking part.

The spring water, just a few metres above, is exceptionally clear, and after the main waterfall, it continues its tumultuous journey downstream, forming approximately 15 more waterfalls, all of which can be easily reached by foot.
