Church of the Transfiguration in Kissos

Churches

ABOUT

In the picturesque village of Kissos, in the municipality of Agios Vasileios, you’ll find the parish church, dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Saviour.

It is a two-aisled basilica, without a dome, featuring equal-height tiled roofs with double slopes. Its construction dates back to the 14th century.

The church is mentioned in "Monumenti Veneti nell'isola di Creta" by Italian historian Giuseppe Gerola, who conducted on-site research in Crete from 1900 to 1902. The church’s founder is noted as Dimitrios Vergilis, whose portrait survives in a fresco on the western end of the church’s interior.

The original structure was altered by later additions, such as a small window near the psalter and the addition of the second aisle. The church was externally restored by the Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities in the mid-1970s, making the two aisles appear as a single structure. Further preservation and beautification works followed later.
