Palm Forest of Agios Nikitas
ABOUT
Crete is undoubtedly a Greek island, yet it possesses numerous tropical elements that contribute to its unique character.
The palm forest of Agios Nikitas, also known as Agios Antonios, is a small indigenous palm forest situated in close proximity to the beach of Agios Nikitas on the southern coast of Heraklion, within the Asterousia region. It ranks as the third largest palm forest on the island of Crete, following the palm forests of Vai and Preveli.
Remarkably, this palm forest is the sole location on the island where the Cretan palm tree thrives at a significant distance from the coastline.
Pirates' Contribution to the Palm Forest's Formation
There is speculation that the palm forest was the result of Saracen pirates visiting the area. As they ventured to the spring to collect water, it is believed they consumed the dates they carried with them and discarded the seeds, ultimately giving rise to the palm forest.
