Minoan Settlement of Azoria
ABOUT
An crucial urban centre of Crete during the archaic period (7th-5th century BC), the settlement of Azoria occupies a distinctive hill.
According to the Municipality of Ierapetra, despite continuous habitation of the area since the Early Iron Age (1200-700 BC), a significant turning point occurred around 700 BC with its destruction, leading to the reconfiguration of the settlement. This reconstruction marked the establishment of a public urban centre. Extensive modifications took place, including the construction of retaining walls, the development of roads and pathways leading to an open communal space, likely the Agora. Public buildings were erected, and new residential areas emerged. This urban restructuring brought about substantial changes in the city's economy and social structure.
