Four Martyrs Church
ABOUT
The Four Martyrs Church in Rethymno is dedicated to the local martyrs Angelis, Manuel, George, and Nikolaos.
It was inaugurated on 28th December 1975, constructed on the grounds of previous structures, situated east of the square bearing the same name and in close proximity to the site of their martyrdom.
The Four New Martyrs met their fate in 1824 and swiftly earned recognition as saints in the hearts of the local populace, who later revered them as guardians of the modern city. The icons adorning the iconostasis were crafted by the renowned iconographer from Asia Minor, Fotis Kontoglou.
Here, within a reliquary, reside the skulls of three of the four martyrs, while beneath lies the chapel of St Savvas the Sanctified.
