Etz Hayyim Synagogue

ABOUT

The Etz Hayyim synagogue is situated in the Old Town of Chania, within the Jewish neighbourhood on Kondylaki Street. It stands as the sole surviving synagogue in Crete, having been constructed in the 17th century and experiencing severe damage during World War II. Following its restoration in 1997-1999, it now serves as a place of prayer, remembrance, reflection, and reconciliation.

The synagogue comprises the main building and two courtyards.

The primary structure is a single-aisled vaulted space, and its internal layout, reminiscent of synagogues in Ioannina, Chalkida, and Corfu, aligns with the tradition of the Romaniote community. The Ehal (Torah shrine) occupies the east wall, with the Bema (Torah reading room) directly opposite on the west wall.
