Axos: Tradition and Springs to the North of Psiloritis
ABOUT
Nestled in the Municipality of Mylopotamos, just 7 kilometres from Anogia, Axos is situated amphitheatrically on a hillside to the north of Psiloritis, at an altitude of about 500 metres. In ancient times, Axos was counted among the 100 city-states of ancient Crete.
This quaint village carries a rich historical tapestry, featuring remnants of the ancient Acropolis atop the hill, a temple dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite, vaulted tombs, and sections of ancient walls. Additionally, Axos proudly houses nine Byzantine churches of particular historical importance.
Beneath the village, nestled between Psiloritis and the Talea (or Talaia) Mountains, lies a vast valley adorned with olive groves, vineyards, and orchards.
For visitors, Axos offers a charming array of tourist shops, barbecues, tavernas, cafés, and traditional coffeehouses to explore and savour.
