Archaeological Site of Vasiliki
ABOUT
The settlement of Vasiliki, counted among the earliest Minoan settlements with urban organisation, graces the slopes and summit of a low hill near the village of Vasiliki, in close proximity to the Minoan settlement of Gournia. Its origins trace back to the Early Minoan II era (2600-2300 BC), and its prosperity stems not only from its strategic position overseeing the Isthmus of Ierapetra but also from the fertile plain in the vicinity. The primary structure of the settlement met its demise through fire around 2300 BC. Subsequently, the hill saw reoccupation, with the emergence of a Middle Minoan building (2200-1900 BC), and evidence of habitation during Roman times has been uncovered.
Excavations continue to this day.
