Archaeological Collection of Ierapetra
ABOUT
The archaeological collection of Ierapetra is housed in the Ottoman School building. It began to be put together in the late 19th century by some learned residents. They founded the Ierapetra Educational Association with the aim of collecting and preserving ancient artefacts found in the area.
The exhibits in the collection tell the story of the area around Ierapetra and date from the 3rd millennium BC to the 5th century AD. The visitor can marvel at clay sarcophagi, vases, inscriptions, sculptures, coins and the beautiful statue of the veiled goddess Persephone which dates back to the 2nd century AD.
