Aposelemi Dam: Discover Sfedili—Crete’s Atlantis!

ABOUT

A vital water source for Crete, the Aposelemi Dam is the island's largest water project, supplying a vast area with drinking water. But it also gave rise to Crete’s very own "Atlantis." The village of Sfedili was evacuated to make way for the dam, and during the summer months, when water levels drop, the church and houses of the village eerily resurface, creating a hauntingly beautiful scene.

The dam is nestled between two picturesque villages in the Municipality of Hersonissos, Potamies and Avdou. Today, it’s not just an engineering marvel but also a sanctuary for birds and other wildlife. A trip to Aposelemi offers the perfect escape for those seeking tranquility in nature.

It’s an ideal spot for all kinds of outdoor activities, from cycling to horseback riding, making it a must-visit for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.
