Ancient Falasarna
ABOUT
The ancient site of Falassarna is situated at the western tip of Cape Gramvousa, on the western coast of Crete.
In antiquity, it was known as Korykos and encompassed the rugged cape, where the acropolis was positioned, providing a breath-taking vista of the western Cretan Sea.
Falasarna stood as one of Crete's foremost ports, reaching its zenith in the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. The etymology of its name is traced back to the nymph and local heroine Falasarni.
The region of Falasarna had been settled since the Middle Minoan period, as indicated by the presence of shells on the neighbouring hillsides and port embankments, and this continued until the middle of the 1st century BC.
