Ancient Polyrinia
ABOUT
Polyrrinia, an ancient city of Crete, stood where the modern small settlement of the same name exists today. Though archaeological finds are sparse, its origins trace back to prehistoric times, as noted by Strabo, who mentioned that the city was founded by Achaeans through the merging of neighboring settlements.
Throughout its history, Polyrrinia developed close ties with several Greek city-states, such as Sparta, Milos, Rhodes, and Thebes, as well as regions beyond the Greek mainland, including the Ionian coast and Egypt. During the Hellenistic period, Polyrrinia was a powerful force and a rival to the nearby maritime city of Phalasarna. It opposed Knossos and Kydonia but avoided participating in the resistance against the Romans, thus escaping the ensuing destruction.
