Ahmed Aga Minaret
ABOUT
The present-day church located within the Malinakis property, situated between Hatzi Michalis Daliani and Tsouderon streets, has a rich history. During the Turkish occupation, it was converted into a mosque by Haseki Ahmet Aga, the head of the janissaries who resided in the nearby barracks, which now house the 1st High School of Chania.
Within the southern courtyard of the church, a small cemetery was established, housing two mausoleums (turbets), as evidenced by old photographs. On the church's western side, a minaret was constructed, and it remains the sole intact minaret, featuring a crescent moon at the top of its dome.
The entrance to the mosque, situated on Hatzi Michalis Daliani Street, displays a small marble inscription from the Koran. After the population exchange, the mosque was repurposed into a wool factory.
